MOT TEST

What is an MOT test?

Cars over 3 years old must by law pass a yearly MOT test to show they are roadworthy.

An MOT involves dozens of checks on your car, ranging from the brakes and fuel system to windscreen wipers, seat belts, mirrors, lights and exhaust system.

The MOT does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch and gearbox.

How long does an MOT take?

An average MOT test takes between 45 and 60 minutes.

In the unfortunate event that your vehicle fails the test, and repairs are needed, it may take a little bit longer.

How much does an MOT cost?

The cost of a full MOT at our garage is £45.

Should your vehicle need a re-test, we offer this for FREE, provided the re-test is carried out within 10 days.

We also offer discounted MOT fee of just £35, if you have your vehicle fully serviced with us throughout the year.

Top 5 simple reasons for cars failing the MOT test

Based on our years of experience in MOT testing, we have found that the followings are common reasons why an MOT test may fail:

  1. Screen wash not topped up. This basic task takes a couple of minutes, so don’t be caught out by it.

  2. The car was dirty or full of clutter. Make sure you take time to clear the mess from the boot and cabin and give the windows and mirrors a quick wipe.

  3. Stickers on the windscreen blocking the driver’s view. Make sure anything stuck to the windscreen like parking permits is outside the wipers’ sweep area.

  4. Lit-up warning light on the dashboard. Make sure you know what lit-up car warning lights mean and, if you have, any sort out the underlying problem before the MOT. Lights on your car's dashboard indicate something's wrong. As a rule of thumb, red warning lights need immediate action – amber or orange, and other colour lights often mean something needs checking by a garage.

  5. A registration plate issue. For example, the plate used the incorrect type face/spacing, or was dirty or missing altogether. If you have a personalised plate, make sure it follows DVLA rules.
